Telescopic Handler Suspended Loads Refresher Course

Overview

This refresher course is designed for existing operators to revalidate their competence in the safe use of Telescopic Handlers fitted with lifting attachments used for handling suspended loads. It provides updated theoretical knowledge, reinforces best practices, and includes a practical assessment to ensure continued safe operation in line with current industry standards.

Certification Routes

NPORS Traditional Route:

  • Valid for 3 years
  • No NVQ or CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test required

NPORS-CSCS Certification Route:

  • Red card (valid for 2 years) issued upon completion
  • To upgrade to a blue card (valid for 5 years), you must complete a relevant NVQ
  • Already got the NVQ? You’ll get the blue card straight away

Suitable For

Operators who currently hold a valid Telescopic Handler – Suspended Loads certificate and require a refresher to maintain NPORS accreditation.

Aims

  • To refresh and update knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
    • Responsibilities as a plant operator and the latest industry safety standards
    • Reconfirm understanding of manufacturer guidance, legislation, and site procedures
    • Review of lifting capacity charts, safe working loads, and how loads affect machine stability
    • Recap on lifting configurations, working ranges, and suspended load limitations
    • Refresher on calculating load weights and identifying centres of gravity
    • Reassessment of overhead and environmental hazards
    • Refresher on using correct communication methods with the Slinger/Signaller
    • Safe fitting and use of lifting attachments
    • Ensuring load security and minimising swing during operations
    • Environmental impacts and best practice control measures
    • End-of-shift and out-of-service procedures

Prerequisites

  • Candidates must present a valid NPORS Telescopic Handler – Suspended Loads certificate that is in date or recently expired (within the NPORS grace period).

Teaching Methods

    • Refresher theoretical session and short written test
    • Practical skills assessment to demonstrate continued competence

Outcome

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card, depending on the chosen certification route, or a Simply Learning in house certificate.
