Overview

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for supervising entry and arrangements at a confined space. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas. Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding. Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

This unit is for supervisors of confined spaces it includes planning and allocating activities for a team, pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, selection of personnel, maintaining communications, and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.

Description

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for supervising entry and arrangements at a confined space.

This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas.

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

Learning outcomes:

  • Implement procedures for teams working in confined spaces.
  • Supervise the control of safe entry and exit to the confined space.
  • Supervise the work team to ensure procedures are followed.
  • Control emergency situations.
  • Understand health and safety and environmental legislation.
  • Understand standard protocols for work in confined spaces.
  • Understand supervisory duties and responsibilities.
  • Understand equipment checks and testing required.

Prerequisites

City & Guilds cannot accept any registrations for learners under 16 as these qualifications are not approved for under 16s.

The weight limit on our Harness is 136kg. Please contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

Candidates must hold the equivalent qualification to the level they are supervising. For example, if candidates are supervising a medium risk confined space, they must hold a City and Guilds Medium Risk Confined Space certificate to attend the course. Evidence of this must be send to us prior to the course start date.

Exam Information

Theory and practical training, practical observation and short answer question paper.

Dress Code

This course involves practical activities in a simulated Confined Space. It is advised that candidates wear old/work clothes or bring overalls with them. 

Candidates must bring the following PPE:

  • Safety boots
  • Hard hat
  • Hi viz
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Materials Required

Candidates must bring with them photographic ID such as an in date driving license or passport.

Without this information, we cannot claim the levy on your behalf and take no responsibility for the grant not being claimed.
