The Level 3 Diploma in Contracting Operations – General is a nationally recognised qualification designed to develop the advanced practical skills, knowledge, and competence required to operate independently or supervise work within construction and contracting environments.
This qualification is suitable for individuals who are working in, or aspiring to work in, higher level operative or supervisory roles in construction, civil engineering, or contracting operations. Learners will gain expertise in planning, executing, and reviewing construction tasks while adhering to industry standards, legislation, and health and safety requirements.
The course reflects real world workplace practices and provides learners with the competence and confidence to take on more responsibility on site, including overseeing teams, coordinating work activities, and ensuring quality and compliance.

Learners will develop skills and knowledge in areas such as:
Health, safety, and welfare in construction and contracting operations
Understanding and applying construction legislation, regulations, and codes of practice
Planning and organising work activities efficiently
Supervising and mentoring junior operatives or teams
Selecting, using, and maintaining tools, equipment, and materials safely
Monitoring, reviewing, and reporting on work quality and compliance

Optional units may allow learners to focus on specific contracting operations or technical specialisms, depending on delivery and employer requirements.
This is a competence-based qualification, assessed through:
Practical observation in a workplace or simulated environment
Portfolio of evidence demonstrating applied skills and knowledge
Professional discussion and questioning
Witness testimonies where applicable
There are no formal examinations. Learners are assessed against national occupational standards to ensure competence in real working environments.
Remote assessment will be used wherever feasible; however, in some situations an in person observation may be required
On completion, learners may progress to: Level 4 NVQs or diplomas in Construction or Contracting Operations. Supervisory or management roles within construction and civil engineering. Apprenticeships at higher levels (e.g., Site Supervisor or Construction Manager). Further specialist or technical qualifications in construction, civil engineering, or contracting operations. Learner will receive a certificate of competence from the awarding body.
